To be a confirmation sponsor according to canon law, an individual must meet certain criteria. They must be Catholic, have received the sacraments of Christian initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist), be at least 18 years old, and lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role they are to undertake. They cannot be the father or mother of the one to be confirmed. Additionally, they must be in good standing with the Catholic Church, which includes not being under any canonical penalty. It is recommended that the Baptism godparent also be the confirmation sponsor to maintain a continuous spiritual bond.
