In what grade does my child need to be in to register for First Reconciliation/Communion preparation?
Children need to be at least 7 years old to receive First Communion. In our parish, children traditionally participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time, and receive their First Communion, when they are in 2nd grade.
My child began First Reconciliation/Communion preparation last year. Do I need to register them again?
Our Religious Education program is changing this year. All families and children need to register again.
My child is older than 2nd grade but needs to prepare for First Confession and First Communion. How do I register them?
Our Religious Education program is not sacrament-oriented anymore, but family-based. That means that when a family registers, we will consider the age of the children, as well as the sacraments they still need to complete their full Christian initiation. Based on it, we will work with them to help them get ready to receive their sacraments.
What are the requirements to receive First Communion?
When can my child receive the Sacrament of Confirmation?
In the Diocese of Sioux City the policy is that confirmation is conferred on young people no earlier than the ninth grade.
Because our program is family-centered, and not geared only towards the sacraments, you may register your family with children in any grades, but only students in ninth grade or higher will have to attend an additional monthly meeting to prepare for the Sacrament.
My child began Confirmation preparation last year. Do I need to register them again?
Our Religious Education program is changing this year. All families and children need to register again.
What if my child is a freshman in high school but has not received First Communion yet?
We will help your child prepare for First Communion and Confession at the same Mass. They will be required to prepare for and attend First reconciliation on Wednesday, February 8.
What are the requirements for Confirmation?
Who can be a sponsor for confirmation?
Ideally a Baptism godparent would also be the sponsor for Confirmation, but we understand that is not always possible.
To be a sponsor for confirmation, the person must be at least 16 years of age, have completer all sacraments of initation, and be living accordind to what the Church teaches; in practical terms that means that if the person is married, it should have been in the Church.
All sponsors for Confirmation will be expected to watch a series of videos explaining them their responsibilites.
Why do parents have to attend classes?
Traditionally we have seen religious education solely as preparation for sacraments. While that is a very important part of our lives as Catholics, religious education is more than just sacramental prep.
Parents are the main educators of their children, and we want to give you the tools to be able to fulfill this responsibility.
What happens if one of the parents cannot attend the monthly meetings?
We understand that ocassionaly parents may have to work, so we will work with you. We also expect you to understand that teaching the faith to your children is something you promised at their Baptisms, and therefore this should be a priority.
How will you know if we are attending Mass?
We currently have only two ways to make sure you are attending Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation.
The first one is by the use of tithing envelopes. Please contact the office to request yours if you are not currently using them. If you are giving through ACH, that is sufficient.
The second one is by volunteering as lector, server, or EMHC at our Masses, and use Ministry Scheduler Pro.
